Our Process

Self Publishing can be a daunting business for those who have never done it before. This document sets out the steps in the process if you publish with A&A, from your first enquiry to a final book available in good bookstores throughout Australia and publicised via national media.

We hope this explanation not only answers your questions, it may also save you time and money!

1. Initial Contact

We receive many referrals – for which we are extremely grateful! Writers also contact us through this website or as a result of reading about us in publications like The Australian Writer’s Marketplace, Newswrite or Good Reading.

2. Sample chapters

When you first contact us we ask to see a sample chapter of your work. It is also helpful if you send a word count. Please also provide your contact details. Your submission may be made in either of two ways:

2. Hardcopy. This can be sent to: PO Box 261, Montville, QLD 4560. Single spacing is fine but please allow generous margins. Send a SSAE if you want your sample returned.

We will respond within 21 working days. Please note, we do turn down manuscripts for a variety of reasons, including the fact that we feel they are not right for us. A quick look at our website and online store will show you our specialties: non-fiction (autobiography, inspirational, self-help, business and sales) and fiction (children’s stories and quality adult fiction).

3. Request for Full Manuscript

After one of our assessors recommends that your sample shows promise, we will ask you to send the full manuscript. We prefer a hard copy sent to our PO Box. Interstate or international clients can submit via email.

4. Exploring the Options

Once your manuscript has been reviewed we will contact you with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. At this stage we will talk to you about your vision and goals for your book. You will then commission us to write our two proposals to publish your book.

5. A&A Publishing Proposals

Based on our discussions with you we prepare two publishing proposals for you. These are legal documents that explain the exact specifications of the finished book, all the services we will provide for you, our legal responsibilities, your legal responsibilities, the costs involved and the timeline.

The Two Proposals are:

(a) Production Proposal

This covers


of your book to the recommended print run (usually 2,000-4,000 for a first print run.).

Please note that all A&A publications MUST undergo book editing from one of our team of skilled editors. Please remember this before paying large amounts of money for editing prior to contacting us!

(b) Publicity and Distribution

Unlike many other self publishers, A&A is delighted to be able to offer its clients the professional services of a book publicist, internet sales and author pages. Our clients’ books are also promoted and distributed to all book retailing outlets via one of Australia’s largest book distributors.

We can also organise client book launches.

Our second proposal outlines the costs, legal responsibilities and timeline for book launch, publicity and distribution of your book.

Commissioning us to write our proposals:

We charge a nominal fee to prepare these two proposals for you. When you decide to proceed with A&A Book Publishing, this amount is credited towards your first production payment.

The reason we make this small charge is two-fold:

  1. We put a lot of time and effort into understanding your vision, calling for quotes and preparing a strategy for the effective marketing of your book.
  2. It is a validation of the level of commitment and trust between all parties involved in birthing your book.
